Only God Is Great

I was reading Psalm 150 today

v2 stood out to me 'praise him for his surpassing greatness'

It is very hard to speak about the greatness of God, from creation to salvation, from his works time into the far reaches of eternity, our words just seem to fall as short, our characters do, I like this story recorded here:

In 1715 King Louis XIV of France died after a reign of 72 years. He had called himself “the Great,” and was the monarch who made the famous statement, “I am the state!” His court was the most magnificent in Europe, and his funeral was equally spectacular. As his body lay in state in a golden coffin, orders were given that the cathedral should be very dimly lit with only a special candle set above his coffin, to dramatize his greatness. At the memorial, thousands waited in hushed silence. Then Bishop Massilon began to speak; slowly reaching down, he snuffed out the candle and said, “Only God is great.” Today in the Word, April, 1989, p. 24.

The psalmist adds a word which helps, he speaks of God's surpassing greatness!

whatever is the best we can think of God, or the best we can say, actually, in reality, he surpasses it. His greatness goes beyond our telling! however, the limits of our language should not prevent our imagination from elevating all that he is and does in praise and worship and aswe see in the psalm, worshiping in as many different ways as possible!
